Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
The Greenville Drive slipped past the Savannah Sand Gnats with a 4-2 win on Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats (8-12/50-40) squandered the best start of the year from Darin Gorski, who tossed a season-high seven innings and struck out seven, matching his season-high.
Gorski last struck out seven batters in his very first appearance of the season, on April 12th.
With the game tied at 2-2, Drive 2B Vladimir Frias drilled a solo home run down the left field line off reliever Brandon Sage leading off the eighth inning to give the Drive (14-6/50-40) a 3-2 lead.
Greenville added an unearned insurance run in the ninth to make the score 4-2. Greenville owns the South Atlantic League's best record in the second half at 14-6.
The Gnats took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning.
DH Alex Gregory led off the inning with a double, and then scored on a wild pitch to put Savannah in front.
After throwing three wild pitches in the fifth inning, Drive reliever Tom Ebert settled in to throw four more innings without allowing a runner to second to earn the win to improve to 8-1.
The Drive tied the game at 2-2 with an unearned run off Gorski in the top of the sixth.
Savannah committed two errors, both of which led to unearned runs for Greenville.
3B Jefry Marte was 0-4, snapping his hitting streak at eight games. CF RJ Harris was 0-3 with a walk, ending his seven-game hitting streak.
Wednesday's game began after a one hour and nine minute rain delay.
The Gnats will send RHP Taylor Whitenton (4-4, 3.66) to the mound on Thirsty Thursday to take on RHP Ryan Pressly (3-5, 4.14) for the Drive.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and gates open at 6 pm.
The pre-game show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com begins at 5:50.
