POWER REPLAY: West Virginia fell 4-3 to Charleston on Friday night. The Power took a 1-0 lead in the second when Greg Polanco scored on a Willy Garcia sac fly. The RiverDogs tied the game in the bottom of second and took a 2-1 lead in the third. West Virginia immediately answered with a run in the fourth when Jose Osuna singled, moved to third on an error, and touched home on a groundout. Charleston plated two in the seventh inning against Stetson Allie, who was making his first appearance since April 6. The Power got one back in the eighth on a triple by Alen Hanson and a Jodaneli Carvajal single, but could not complete the comeback and lost by one for the second straight game. Allie was charged with the loss after tossing a third of an inning while walking four.
WEST V. SOUTH: The Power and RiverDogs will play a total of 14 time this season after having met 15 times in 2011. Charleston won eight times last season and, with two wins already this year, are one win away from evening out the all-time series. West Virginia holds a 19-18 edge in the series due in part to 10 wins in 22 games at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park.
WORKING FOR A DOZEN: Alen Hanson's hitting streak is at 11 games after his third straight two-hit game. The infielder is batting .447 during his current streak, has surpassed the longest hitting streak by any player during the 2011 season. Dan Grovatt and Mel Rojas Jr. each had ten game streaks as a season best by any Power player last year. Hanson has hit three home runs, scored 13 runs, and driven in seven during this streak.
TRIPLED OFF: West Virginia's Jodaneli Carvajal hit into the South Atlantic League's first triple play of the 2012 season Thursday night in the top of the third. Carvajal lined to the shortstop Cito Culver with the bases loaded. Culver then started the relays around the infield- first to home to third- to get the other two outs.
BUSY WEEK FOR TRAVEL: The Pittsburgh Pirates made three moves Thursday that altered the active West Virginia roster. Porfirio Lopez was promoted back to Bradenton after appearing in Tuesday night's Power game. Josh Poytress was also promoted to High-A after having gone 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA for West Virginia over three games. Eric Avila was transferred to the Extended Spring roster having only played in four of 13 possible games this year. To fill these three openings, Pittsburgh added three pitchers who had previously been on the roster. Stetson Allie was added off the Extended Spring roster while Orlando Castro and Mike Jefferson were promoted from State College.
PROMO UPDATE- APRIL 27: The Power will host a Charlies Reunion Night on April 27 at Appalachian Power Park. Former Charleston Charlies like Kent Tekulve, Steve Blass, and Dave Parker will be in attendance for the game and will sign autographs. A commemorative Charlies giveaway will also be handed out to the fans in attendance.
POWER POINTS: Power baserunners combined to steal a season high five bags on Thursday. Prior to Thursday, the team had not swiped more than two bases in any game... West Virginia's only win on the road this season was April 6 at Hagerstown. The team has lost seven straight road games since then... The Power have three players who "lead" the league in errors at their respective positions... With eight strikeouts last night, Zack Dodson matched Matt Benedict for the team lead with 15.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost the series opener with St. Louis 4-1 ... Indianapolis's game with Columbus was postponed due to rain... Altoona was defeated 15-7 by Richmond... Bradenton slipped past Ft. Myers 4-3. Josh Poytress earned the win and Quinton Miller gained his first save.
