POWER REPLAY: West Virginia blanked Charleston 1-0 on Monday evening. Zack Von Rosenberg combined with Casey Sadler and Brooks Pounders for the shutout, allowing only six hits while walking none and striking out nine total. Chase Lyles drove in Mel Rojas Jr. in the sixth inning for the only run of the game.
SHUTOUT STATS: West Virginia pitchers worked their ninth shutout of the season in yesterday's win. The club record for shutouts in any one season is 10, set by the 2006 club while still affiliated with Milwaukee. Since the association with the Pirates began in 2009, the Power have pitched 24 shutouts over two plus years, compared to 29 during the four year Brewer stint.
MOVED: Zac Fuesser was added to the Power roster on Sunday in time to make the start. The corresponding roster move made by Pittsburgh when promoting Fuesser back from State College was to transfer Colton Cain to the Spikes roster. Like the Fuesser move last week, this is not expected to be permanent.
TOO MUCH: West Virginia's 14-run loss on Sunday was their largest margin of defeat this season. The previous high defeat mark was 11 during the first homestand of the season; a 13-2 loss to Asheville at Appalachian Power Park. West Virginia also walked a season-high eight batters yesterday. The previous high was six walks; a feat that occurred twice earlier this month.
NO FREE PASSES: Despite eight walks Sunday, West Virginia's pitching staff continues to lead all of baseball with the fewest number of batters walked this year. Power pitchers have combined to walk 221 batters through99 games.
SOUTHERN SWING: West Virginia concludes its final trip to Charleston, South Carolina, this afternoon. The Power split on their last trip to Joseph P. Riley Park, winning on May 9 and 10, but falling in the next two games. These clubs met last weekend at Appalachian Power Park with the Power taking two of three including a walk-off win last Monday night on a Drew Maggi single. West Virginia is 17-13 all-time against the RiverDogs, including an 9-10 mark on the road in the set. Charleston will come to Appalachian Power Park on August 10 for a four game series.
VERGE OF HISTORY: Rogelio Noris has 24 career home runs for West Virginia over a season and a half in a Power jersey. Noris has matched Stephen Chapman for the most home runs in any player's Power career. Chapman hit a single-season record 24 home runs in a Power uniform in 2007.
TRIPLE THREAT: Andy Vasquez now has 10 triples this season, most in the SAL by four three-base hits. Vasquez has matched Quincy Latimore single season club record of 10. Latimore finished in a tie for second in triples during the 2009 season, the team's first year as an affiliate of the Pirates.
POWER POINTS: Eric Avila's six game hitting streak was stopped Sunday with an 0-3 performance, while Rogelio Noris stretched his streak to eight games by going 1-4 last night.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh edged Atlanta 3-1 on national television... Indianapolis outlasted Rochester 7-6 in 12 innings... Altoona lost 5-4 at reading in walk-off fashion... Bradenton lost 5-4 at Clearwater... State College fell 9-5 to Brooklyn.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
