Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Lakewood, NJ - It's often said that baseball is a game of inches and that was the case on Tuesday night in Lakewood, New Jersey. With the winning run at third for the Lakewood BlueClaws, Geancarlo Mendez's sinking liner to right was just out of the reach of Augusta GreenJackets right fielder Ryan Lollis as the BlueClaws picked up the 4-3 win over the GreenJackets and took three of four from Augusta in the four-game series.
With the game tied at three in the ninth, Carlos Perdomo drew a one-out walk to put the winning run on base for Lakewood. Miguel Alvarez hit a liner toward second but Carlos Willoughby made a great diving catch to his right for the second out. Willoughby couldn't get the ball out of his glove in time to double Perdomo off first base and the GreenJackets missed the chance to send the game to extras with a double play.
Perdomo stole second with two outs and took third when Jeff Arnold's throw sailed into centerfield. After Carlos Alonso walked, Mendez hit his liner into right that ended up just beyond Lollis's reach to provide the BlueClaws with their ninth walkoff win of the year.
Augusta struck first with a run in the fourth on Josh Mazzola's RBI single - moving his hit streak to seven games - but the BlueClaws answered with a pair in the bottom of the inning. Jim Murphy's RBI single tied the game while Domingo Santana doubled down the left field line to bring in a run and give Lakewood a 2-1 edge.
The GreenJackets battled back in the sixth and took a lead of their own, scoring twice while sending eight to the plate in the inning. Lollis singled home the tying run and with the bases loaded later in the inning, Ryan Scoma's RBI hit gave Augusta a 3-2 advantage. The lead would be short-lived as the BlueClaws tied the game at three in the bottom of the sixth on Anthony Hewitt's RBI single.
Lakewood's run in the sixth took away a potential win for Ryan Bradley, who allowed two runs on five hits in five innings. Seth Rosin (2-3) stranded a man at third to send the seventh inning, but took the loss after allowing Mendez's game-winner in the ninth. He fired 2.2 innings and allowed one run on two hits and three walks while striking out three.
Colby Shreve (4-5) earned the win for Lakewood with three scoreless innings of three-hit relief, striking out three GreenJackets.
Since the 2007 season, the BlueClaws are 12-4 against the GreenJackets and have taken three of four from Augusta in the last four series between the two teams.
The GreenJackets have Wednesday off to recover from the long trip back from New Jersey before opening a four-game homestand on Thursday night. Gaspar Santiago (3-4, 4.01) gets the ball for the GreenJackets in the series opener against the Hickory Crawdads while the 'Dads send Luke Jackson (3-2, 4.87) to the hill. It'll be another Thirsty Thursday as fans can enjoy dollar domestic drafts and small soft drinks courtesy of 95 Rock and the Vue Lounge. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
