Power Falls to Intimidators

Charleston, WV (August 6, 2009) - The Kannapolis Intimidators scored early and often on Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park, plating runs in four out of the first five innings of the contest to defeat the Power 12-2.

Kannapolis plated four runs in the second inning to set the tone. Kenny Williams ripped a double down the left field line to plate two runs, and Robbie Grossman's error on the play allowed a third run to come in as well. The next batter, Drew Garcia hit a groundball to first which Kyle Morgan booted, and the error brought in another run. The Power plated their first run in the bottom of the inning when Calvin Anderson scored on Greg Picart's fielder's choice.

The Intimidators plated single runs in the third and fourth before blowing up for six runs to pull away in the fifth inning. They sent ten batters to plate in the six run frame and tallied four hits. Josh Phegley belted a two-run homer to start the scoring. Williams reached on Morgan's error at first base brought Eduardo Escobar in before Brandon Short tripled in the next two, and Short scored the final run of the inning on Jon Gilmore's double. The Power scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Quincy Latimore was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Nevin Griffith (2-3) allowed just a pair of runs on eight hits over six innings to secure the victory. Quinton Miller (1-3) was tagged for five runs on five hits over three innings and was tagged with the loss. Ryan Kelly tossed the final three innings of the game for the Power, and held the Intimidators scoreless, while allowing just a pair of hits and fanned four in the process.

West Virginia fell to 46-60 overall, and 19-17 in the second half after the loss, while the Intimidators improved to 61-48 overall and 24-15 in the second half after the win. Robbie Grossman, Kyle Morgan, Calvin Anderson and Greg Picart all turned in two-hit games for West Virginia. Starling Marte singled in his first at bat to extend his hitting streak to 20 games and has reached in all 31 games with the Power. West Virginia hit into three double plays on the night, including a pair of inning enders.

West Virginia will finish the four game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators at Appalachian Power Park on Friday night. The Power will start right hander Brett Lorin (1-0, 1.50) and the Intimidators will counter with right hander Joe Serafin (0-0, 2.25). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:05 PM.
