Lexington Legends News Release

Baseball has to deal with rainouts occasionally, but the Breathitt County Junior Red Cross Club had to overcome the effects of a flood to make their annual trip to Lexington for a Legends game at Applebee's Park.

When massive flooding hit Eastern Kentucky in May, club members voted to use all of their available funds to assist those affected by the disaster. That included the money allocated for the trip to Lexington, which the club makes each year to reward students for their service.

"The students do a number of service projects each year, and the reward for a student who completes six service projects is a trip to see the Legends," said Rose Wolfe, club sponsor and chair of the Mid East Kentucky Red Cross Chapter.

With its commitment, the club helped 169 families recover from the devastation of the flooding, but it appeared the 74 students eligible for the Lexington trip would not get to go.

After hearing that news, Terry Burkhart, CEO of the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross, reached out to two Breathitt County natives - Glenn Leveridge, president of Central Bank's Winchester market, and Luther Deaton, president of Central Bank and Trust. Central Bank agreed to make a contribution to sponsor the trip, and the Legends, their concessionaire, ARAMARK, and team President Alan Stein and his wife, State Senator Kathy Stein, agreed to cover the remaining expenses.

"We're very proud to have the Red Cross as a partner and to be considered as the reward for such tremendous and selfless acts these individuals have provided the Breathitt County community," said Legends General Manager Andy Shea. "It's going to be a night to remember!"

"This is exactly how you want young people to be thinking," Alan Stein said. "How could we not pitch in to reward their act of kindness?"

The trip to Lexington is set for August 8, when the Legends play the Asheville Tourists at Applebee's Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
