Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws have been looking for big hits with runners in scoring position for the past few games and Kyle Lafrenz finally provided one with the bases loaded in the eighth. His bases-clearing double with two out in a 5-4 game gave the BlueClaws a 7-5 victory against the Lake County Captains.
The Captains (21-19) got out to an early lead as, with one out, Delvi Cid singled in the infield and stole second base. With two outs, Jeremy Tice singled to center and the throw home from center was late, scoring Cid.
The BlueClaws (21-19) tied the game up in the next half inning as Anthony Gose singled with two outs, stole second base and then scored on a bloop single by Jesus Villegas.
The BlueClaws took the lead in the fourth as Jim Murphy singled, advanced to second and scored on a single by Troy Hanzawa with two outs.
The Captains however got two in the fifth as Bo Greenwell scored on a double by Jeremy Tice and Tice scored as Donnie Webb singled the ball back up the middle, hitting starter Trevor May and allowing the run to score. May exited the ballgame after being struck.
The BlueClaws tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as Warren walked to lead things off and he moved to second as Anthony Gose singled. The pitcher, Chris Jones, tried a pickoff attempt and threw the ball into center; Warren came home from second and made it 3-3.
The Captains would tally in the seventh to go ahead 4-3 but the BlueClaws tied it as Warren tripled and Gose hit a sacrifice to make it 4-4.
The back-and-forth trend continued as the Captains took the lead 5-4 in the top of the eighth as Donnie Webb tripled and also scored on a sacrifice and in the bottom of the inning; the BlueClaws loaded the bases for Kyle Lafrenz to do the damage. Lafrenz took Chris Jones to a full count and sent the ball screaming into center for a bases-clearing double and a 7-5 lead.
On the same day closer BJ Rosenberg gets promoted to Reading, the BlueClaws find themselves in a save situation and its Ryan Bergh's chance to slam the door shut. Bergh, who shined in the same role early in the season, worked a perfect ninth with two strikeouts for his 12th save of the year.
May went 4.2 and allowed three runs while striking out seven and gave way to Jordan Ellis (3-2) who worked the next 3.1 innings.
Nick Hagadone, in his first start since being sent over from the Boston Red Sox pitched the first three innings and struck out five in the no decision as Chris Jones (5-3) struggled in the next 4.2. He allowed six runs, five earned.
The BlueClaws and Captains will play game four of the five-game series on Friday at 7:05 pm. In that contest, the BlueClaws will send Justin De Fratus (5-4) to the mound and he will be opposed by TJ McFarland (6-4).
