Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, WV)- The West Virginia Power lost game one of a three game series to the Delmarva Shorebirds 9-5 in the 13 innings. Tito Polo launched his ninth home run of the year in the team's first extra inning loss of the season.
Delmarva opened the scoring with three runs against starter Dario Agrazal during an eight batter first, highlighted by a lead off home run by Cedric Mullins.
The Power responded with three runs of their own in the home half of the frame to tie the game. After West Virginia loaded the bases on two walks and a Ke'Bryan Hayes single, Daniel Arribas reached on a misplayed groundball by shortstop Ricardo Andujar which allowed Tito Polo to score the Power's first run. The club scored their second run on a bases loaded walk and tied the game with a sacrifice fly by Logan Hill.
The 'Birds retook a brief lead in the second on a DJ Stewart RBI single, however once again the Power tied the game in the bottom half. Tito Polo blasted the third pitch of the inning over the left field wall for his ninth home run of the season, second best in the South Atlantic League.
Agrazal received a no-decision after surrendering five runs and ten hits over four innings.
The game remained tied 5-4 until Ryan Mountcastle hit a solo home run in the fourth to put the 'Birds up by a run.
West Virginia came back to tie the game in the sixth. Christian Kelley and Alfredo Reyes hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. With Polo at the plate, Kelley came home to score on a wild pitch from reliever Steve Cleavinger, tying the game at 5-5.
That would be the score until the thirteenth when Delmarva broke through for four runs, capped by a two run triple by Ademar Rifaela against Power reliever Billy Roth, giving the 'Birds a 9-5 lead. The Power went down in order in the bottom half of the inning, and the 'Birds took game one of the series 9-5.
The Power had the winning run on base in four consecutive extra innings, however were unable to bring him home.
Roth (2-3) takes the loss after allowing four runs in two innings of relief.
Jay Flaa (1-0) allowed just two hits in three shutout innings to earn the victory.
The teams play game two of the series Tuesday night. The Power will try to even the series by sending J.T. Brubaker to the mound, matched up against 'Birds starter Ofelky Peralta. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. at Appalachian Power Park.
