Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

CHARLESTON, W.V. - The Delmarva Shorebirds were willing to wait any amount of time to get their first win of this road trip, and they were finally able to snap their three-game losing streak a 9-5 win in 13 innings on Monday night that lasted four hours and 51 minutes.

The Shorebirds (31-24) finished with 17 hits, just one hit shy of matching the team's season high in 2016 and outhit the Power (29-27) by a 17-9 margin.

The 13th inning wound up being lucky for the Shorebirds, as Ryan Mountcastle led the inning off with a walk before DJ Stewart knocked a single. Alex Murphy then came up huge with a single that scored two runs thanks to a fielding error. Ademar Rifaela added more insurance runs on a two-run triple.

Mountcastle and Stewart combined to form a formidable one-two punch all game long. Mountcastle ended the night hitting 4-for-6 and was a triple short of the cycle. Stewart, meanwhile, finished 4-for-7 with a pair of RBIs.

Delmarva appeared to have broken the game open much earlier in the top of the first when the Shorebirds jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Cedric Mullins put the 'Birds up immediately with a leadoff home run, his fourth dinger of the year. Mountcastle and Stewart followed with back-to-back doubles to grow the advantage to 2-0. Alex Murphy then knocked in his 31st RBI of the season to add the final run of the frame.

West Virginia responded with a three-run inning of their own and knocked out starter Reid Love after just 0.2 innings. The Shorebirds' bullpen answered the call, as Garrett Cleavinger, Elias Pinales, Christian Turnipseed, Jay Flaa and Jesus Liranzo combined to allow just one earned run in 12.1 innings of work.

The two teams would exchange runs in the second inning, as Stewart's second RBI hit of the day was answered by a Tito Polo home run.

Delmarva pulled ahead again in the top of the fourth when Mountcastle hit his second home run of the season. The dinger was his first since Opening Night in Hagerstown back on April 7.

The Shorebirds' defense played an unusually shaky contest in the field, as the team committed four errors. A pair of throwing errors on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh pushed the tying run across the plate for West Virginia.

The two teams remained deadlocked until the 13th when the Shorebirds pulled ahead for good. Flaa earned his first win of the season after Liranzo retired the side in the game's final frame.

Delmarva will look to build on this emotional win Tuesday night as Cristian Alvarado (3-4, 4.13) will start for the Shorebirds at Appalachian Power Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
