Four-Run Lead Disappears for Second Straight Game
June 6, 2016 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release
ASHEVILLE, NC - Entering Saturday's game, the Asheville Tourists had not blown a lead of more than three runs all season. After Saturday's 6-5 loss to Greenville in which the Tourists held a 4-0 lead; Asheville saw a 4-0 lead transform into a 12-4 defeat at the hands of the Hagerstown Suns on Monday.
The Tourists rallied for all four of their runs of Suns starter Joan Baez. Brian Mundell and Hamlet Marte each recorded RBI singles in the third. Chris Keck launched an RBI double in the fourth and Mylz Jones added an RBI single. Once the Suns went to their bullpen the Tourists offense quieted down. Trey Lambert and Mick VanVossen combined for 5.1 shutout innings.
The Suns captured the lead in the top of the sixth inning with five runs. They scored two in the seventh, two in the eighth, and three more in the ninth. Asheville's bullpen surrendered ten runs.
All was not lost on the evening, however, as prior to the regular scheduled game the Tourists and the Suns had to make up the April 28th suspended contest. The Tourists held on to win 12-10 as the two teams picked up the game in the sixth inning. The Suns committed three errors in the final three innings and Justin Lawrence induced a game-ending double play with the tying run on base. The win marked number 100 for Tourists skipper Warren Schaeffer.
Asheville has now lost seven of nine and four straight to Hagerstown. The same two teams are back at it on Tuesday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
