Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power beat the Hagerstown Suns 4-2 on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park. Gregory Polanco drove in all four Power runs and helped back Robby Rowland's sixth win of the season.
West Virginia scored in the first inning for the second straight night in the series. Alen Hanson singled and stole second before moving to third on an errant pickoff attempt by Suns starting pitcher Taylor Jordan. With one out, Hanson scored on a ground out by Polanco for a 1-0 lead.
In the second, the Power added three more runs. With two outs and the bases loaded, Polanco doubled in Elias Diaz, Hanson, and Taylor Lewis to extend the advantage to 4-0.
Rowland (6-3) allowed three first inning hits and a single in the third, but kept the Hagerstown offense off the scoreboard through six innings. In the seventh, JR Higley hit a two run home run off Rowland to cut the Power lead in half. Robbie Kilcrease relieved Rowland with an inning and a third of shutout ball before Nathan Kilcrease tossed a scoreless ninth for his eighth save.
Jordan (0-1) took the loss after allowing all four runs, though none were earned due to four Hagerstown errors.
With the win and a loss by Hickory, West Virginia moved into sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division. The Power went 17-12 in July, matching Asheville for the best record during the month in the entire league.
West Virginia and Hagerstown continue this four game series on Wednesday evening at Appalachian Power Park. The Power will send Mike Jefferson to the mound against the Suns Brian Rauh. First pitch is slated for 7:05 pm.
SECOND HALF RECORD: 22-17
OVERALL RECORD: 45-64
