Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - 3B Dustin Lawley delivered the game winning single in the bottom of the 11th inning to send home CF Gilbert Gomez with the winning run to give the Savannah Sand Gnats a 2-1 win over the Greensboro Grasshoppers Tuesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. Lawley, who was two-for-five, drove home both Savannah (17-21/58-47) runs.
The Hoppers (16-22/62-46) scored their first and only run against Savannah starter Jacob deGrom in the top of the first inning. With one out, 2B Austin Barnes doubled to right-centerfield, and then came home on C Wilfredo Gimenez's double RBI double down the leftfield line.
deGrom grew stronger as the game went on, completing seven innings to lower his ERA to 2.37. After leaving the bases loaded in the third inning, he retired the final seven batters in a row to face him and 13 of his final 15 opponents. In his seven innings, he yielded just one run on four hits, walking two and fanning five.
The Gnats evened the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth. C Cam Maron drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on 3B Dustin Lawley's single under the glove of 'Hoppers' shortstop Austin Nola.
The Gnats' bullpen of Estarlin Morel, TJ Chism and Chasen Bradford combined to give the team four scoreless innings, twice stranding a runner at third. Bradford worked a 1-2-3 11th with two strikeouts to earn the win when the Gnats scored in the bottom of the frame.
The Gnats and Hoppers are scheduled to play a doubleheader composed of two seven-inning games Wednesday as a makeup for Monday's postponed contest. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 5:30. In game one, the Gnats will send RHP Michael Fulmer (6-5, 2.51) to the mound against LHP Charlie Lowell (5-4, 3.94). LHP Alex Panteliodis (3-5, 3.47) takes the ball in game two against RHP Jose Urena (6-5, 3.23). Game two will follow game one by one half hour. Gates at Historic Grayson Stadium open at 5 pm and the radio broadcast, presented by Subway will join game one in progress at 6 pm.
