Stockton Ports News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Giants won the season series with the Stockton Ports in 2016, but Stockton got the last laugh on Sunday at Municipal Stadium. The Ports scored three runs in the fifth inning to erase a one-run deficit on their way to a 5-2 win, securing their 11th series victory of the season.

Stockton opened the scoring in the first inning for the third time in four games. Melvin Mercedes and Mikey White opened the game with back-to-back singles. After a wild pitch advanced them to second and third, B.J. Boyd would drive in Mercedes with an RBI groundout to give the Ports a 1-0 lead.

San Jose tied the game in the second. Daniel Carbonell singled with one out and would advance to third on an ensuing single by Ty Ross. Robbie Garvey then hit into a fielder's choice force play that scored Carbonell and tied the game at 1-1.

The Giants grabbed their first lead in the fourth. T.J. Bennett led off with a double and advanced to third on a bobble by center fielder James Harris. He scored on an ensuing single by Carbonell to put San Jose in front 2-1. Following the Carbonell single, Stockton pitching retired the next 11 consecutive batters.

Ports starter James Naile (2-0) would earn the win, going five innings and allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out five.

Stockton grabbed the lead back for good in the fifth. Richie Martin opened the frame with a triple to center and scored two batters later on an RBI single to left by Argenis Raga that tied the game at 2-2. Giants starter Mark Reyes (8-6) then proceeded to walk back-to-back hitters to load the bases. Harris came up and gave Stockton the lead back with a sac-fly to right. After Boyd drew a walk to load the bases, Sandber Pimentel added to the Ports lead with an infield single that plated Mercedes and made it 4-2. The hit also knocked Reyes from the contest as Austin Fleet entered and got John Nogowski to pop out to end the inning.

Reyes suffered the loss, going 4.2 innings and allowing four runs on six hits while walking three and striking out two.

The Ports added to their lead in the seventh when Boyd hit his second home run in as many games, a solo blast with two outs off of Fleet to make it a 5-2 score. It was the only run allowed by Fleet in two-and-a-third innings of relief.

Joey Wagman took over to begin the sixth and would pitch three strong innings in relief of Naile. Wagman allowed just one hit and hit a batter while striking out one over three scoreless frames.

Conner Menez pitched two scoreless frames in relief for San Jose to close out the contest. Cody Stull (SV, 2) set the side down in order in the ninth to notch his second save of the season. Stull, who pitched three perfect innings and was the winning pitcher in Stockton's win on Thursday night, retired all 12 batters he faced in the series.

The Giants finish the season series having won 14 of the 22 meetings head-to-head with Stockton.

Following a day off on Monday, the Ports continue their road trip as they open a three-game series with the Modesto Nuts at John Thurman Field on Tuesday. Kyle Friedrichs (3-5, 4.71 ERA) gets the start in the series opener for Stockton, opposed by Modesto left-hander Jack Wynkoop (3-2, 3.28 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
