San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - The Stockton Ports used a three-run top of the fifth inning to take the lead for good en route to a 5-2 victory over the San Jose Giants on Sunday evening at Municipal Stadium. San Jose was held to five hits in the contest and one just after the fourth inning. With the loss, the Giants (58-56) dropped three out of four games in the series.
Daniel Carbonell (2-for-4, RBI, SB) was the only San Jose player to finish the game with more than one hit.
The Ports jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a single run in the top of the first against Giants starter Mark Reyes. Back-to-back singles from Melvin Mercedes and Mikey White started the game before the runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Following a strikeout, B.J. Boyd grounded out to shortstop plating Mercedes with the first run of the night.
San Jose tied the game in the bottom of the second. Consecutive one-out singles from Carbonell and Ty Ross put runners on the corners for the Giants. Robbie Garvey then grounded into a fielder's choice as Ross was forced out at second, however Carbonell scored to make it 1-1.
Meanwhile, Reyes settled down and worked back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the second and third. A two-out single from Sandber Pimentel in the top of the fourth snapped a streak of 11 batters in a row retired by the left-hander, but Reyes quickly got out of the inning to keep the game tied.
San Jose then took a 2-1 lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth. T.J. Bennett led off the frame with a double to deep left center and immediately scored the go-ahead run when the next batter, Carbonell, grounded a single up the middle.
With the Giants in front by a run, Reyes returned to the mound for the top of the fifth, but immediately ran into trouble. Richie Martin led off with a triple off the fence in straightaway center. After Seth Brown popped out, Argenis Raga singled sharply into left plating Martin to tie the game 2-2. Reyes then issued back-to-back walks to Mercedes and White to load the bases. James Harris was up next and he hit a sacrifice fly to right bringing home Raga for a 3-2 Stockton lead. Reyes then walked his third hitter of the inning as Boyd drew a free pass to again load the bases before a Pimentel infield single to shortstop scored Mercedes to make it 4-2. The RBI hit ended Reyes' night as Austin Fleet entered from the bullpen and retired John Nogowski on a pop out to shortstop to end the inning.
The Ports pushed their lead to 5-2 in the top of the seventh when Boyd connected for a two-out solo home run to left center off of Fleet (2 1/3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO).
San Jose managed only two baserunners over the final five innings. Ronnie Jebavy was hit by a pitch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but was promptly picked-off at first. Dylan Davis then doubled down the left field line with two outs in the eighth, however was stranded in scoring position when Miguel Gomez flied out.
Stockton starter James Naile (2-0) earned the win after pitching five innings with two runs (both earned) allowed. He surrendered five hits, walked two and struck out five. Joey Wagman then tossed three scoreless innings of long relief before Cody Stull worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth for his second save of the year.
Reyes (8-6) was charged with four runs (all earned) on six hits in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss. He walked three and struck out two. Reyes retired only two out of the eight batters he faced during the decisive fifth-inning rally.
Notes - * The Giants suffered their first home series loss since June 27-29 (vs. Bakersfield). * Stockton out-hit San Jose 11-6 on Sunday. * Bennett finished the series 7-for-17 (.412 AVG) with two doubles and two home runs. * Sunday was the final game between the Giants and the Ports this season.
