Ports No-Hit for First Time Since '87 in 2-0 Loss

LANCASTER, Calif. - For the first time in their 17-year history, the Lancaster JetHawks threw a nine-inning no-hitter on Sunday afternoon at The Hangar. Kyle Hallock (1-0) and Luis Cruz (SV, 2) combined to hold the Stockton Ports hitless for the duration of Sunday's ballgame as the Ports, no-hit for the first time since August 15, 1987, lost by a final of 2-0.

Port starter Jake Brown (1-2) retired the first seven batters he faced before a one-out fielding error was committed by third baseman B.A. Vollmuth in the third. Two batters later with two away, Vollmuth committed a throwing error to first that put two aboard, but Brown escaped the jam by getting Nolan Fontana to ground to first.

Hallock, the Lancaster starter making his California League debut, set down the first 11 batters he faced before second baseman Delino DeShields committed a throwing error on a grounder hit by Max Muncy, putting a man aboard for the first time for Stockton. Hallock got Antonio Lamas to pop to short and then proceeded to set the side down in order to close is outing after five innings. Hallock received the win as he struck out three over his five innings of work.

Brown, who hadn't allowed a hit over the first three innings, gave up a ground-rule double to Anderw Aplin to open the fourth. Aplin advanced to third on a groundout to the right side and scored on a sac-fly by Preston Tucker to give the JetHawks a 1-0 lead.

Brown retired the final nine batters he faced after allowing the hit to Aplin, but suffered the tough-luck loss, going six innings and allowing just the one hit while striking out two.

Brett Hunter made his first appearance of the season for Stockton in the seventh and set the side down in order with back-to-back strikeouts of Tucker and Telvin Nash to end the inning.

Blake Hassebrock came on to pitch the eighth and gave up a leadoff single to Brandon Meredith, just the second hit of the ballgame. Meredith stole second and advanced to third on a groundout to the right side. After Ryan McCurdy was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners, DeShields came up and bunted to the right side of the infield. Hassebrock went to field the ball and missed it when he went to pick it off the ground. Meredith scored from third with an RBI credited to DeShields, and Hassebrock avoided further trouble by striking out Fontana and getting Aplin to ground out to end the frame.

Cruz, who came on to start the sixth inning for Lancaster, retired the first 10 batters he faced to take him one out deep into the ninth inning. Cruz then walked Tony Thompson providing Stockton with its second baserunner of the game and bringing the tying run to the plate in Addison Russell. Russell, however, hit into a game-ending 6-4-3 double-play that preserved the Lancaster no-hitter.

For Stockton, it was the first time they've been no-hit since August 15, 1987 when they failed to get a hit off Modesto A's pitcher Joe Law.

Lancaster's only other no-hitter in team history came in 2010 and it was a 10-inning accomplishment when five pitchers combined to no-hit the Lake Elsinore Storm in a 3-1 victory on August 25th.

Now on a five-game losing skid, their longest of the season, the Ports look to salvage the finale of their four-game series with Lancaster in a Monday morning affair. Deyvi Jimenez (0-1, 6.11 ERA) will make the start for the Ports, opposed by JetHawks left-hander Blair Walters (3-0, 3.72 ERA). First pitch is set for 11 a.m. PDT.
