Modesto Nuts News Release
BAKERSFIELD, CA (May 12th, 2013) -- The Nuts picked up their second shutout win in the last four games, defeating the Blaze 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
Nuts starter Chris Jensen (1-3) turned in the best starting performance of the year for Modesto, limiting the Blaze to three hits in eight shutout innings to get his first win of the season. The 22-year-old was perfect through the first 13 batters of the game before allowing a bloop single to Kyle Waldrop with one out in the fifth. Needing only 90 pitches in the game, the righty struck out six and only walked one.
Reliever Nelson Gonzalez worked a scoreless ninth to finish off the game.
Blaze starter Jon Moscot (0-6) took a tough-luck loss, lasting seven innings and allowing just three runs (two earned) in the contest. After working four scoreless, Moscot issued a lead off walk in the fifth to Ryan Casteel. Following singles by Harold Riggins and Sam Mende, the Nuts plated their first run on a sac-fly from Juan Crousset. Modesto then caught a break as a pop fly from Tim Smalling was dropped by Blaze second-baseman Josef Terry, putting the Nuts in front 2-0.
A misplayed fly ball in the seventh with two outs by the Blaze defense allowed Trevor Story to reach on a double, and he scored on a flair from Taylor Featherston to make it 3-0. Modesto added two more in the ninth on a 2-run double by Story, who extended his season-best hitting streak to seven games.
With their first win the series, the Nuts look for a split in the four-game set as they return to Bakersfield on Monday night. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. RHP Ben Alsup (3-2, 3.50) will start for the Nuts, opposite RHP James Allen (1-4, 5.50) for the Blaze.
