Modesto Nuts News Release
BAKERSFIELD, CA (May 11th, 2013) -- Blaze outfielder Kyle Waldrop homered on the first pitch in the bottom of the 10th to send Bakersfield to a 6-5 walk-off win over Modesto on Saturday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
The Nuts (15-21) trailed as much as 4-1 early in the contest, but battled back to eventually make it 5-5 going into extras. Scott Oberg (1-4) had just entered the game in the 10th to face Waldrop, as he took his fourth loss of the year. Pat Doyle (3-0) worked around a two-out error in the top of the 10th to notch the victory for the Blaze.
Down 5-3 in the seventh, Nuts catcher Ryan Casteel belted a 2-run homer against Brooks Pinckard to even the score. Modesto had a few chances to take their first lead over the final four innings, but struggled once again to hit with men in scoring position. The team went 4-for-15 in those situations, leaving 11 on the bases.
Nuts reliever Geoff Parker made a spot start with Tyler Anderson on the disabled list, and he gave up four runs in 2 2/3 innings to start the game. After a pair of RBI singles by Waldrop and Yorman Rodriguez in the first, Juan Silverio hit a two-run homer in the third to knock him out of the game.
Modesto's bullpen was strong the rest of the way, with Nick Schnaitmann, Leuris Gomez, and Ken Roberts combining to allow just one run through the next 6 2/3 innings.
The Nuts scratched away at a 4-1 deficit, plating a run in the fifth on a grounder from David Kandilas, and in the sixth on an RBI single by Juan Crousset. But in both innings, Modesto left men in scoring position with a chance for bigger innings.
Waldrop, who finished with three RBI's in the game, also hit a solo home run against Schnaitmann in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-3, before Casteel's blast tied it up in the seventh.
After losing the first two contests this weekend, Modesto will aim for a split now in the four-game series against the Blaze. They will return to Sam Lynn Ballpark for a quick turnaround in the third game in the set tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. RHP Chris Jensen (0-3, 4.15) is set to take the hill for the Nuts, opposite RHP Jon Moscot (0-5, 7.63) for the Blaze.
