San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE - The High Desert Mavericks sent all nine batters to the plate in a four-run top of the first before cruising to a 6-0 victory over the San Jose Giants on Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. The defeat snaps San Jose's season-high winning streak at six games.
Four High Desert pitchers combined on a four-hitter as the Giants advanced a runner past first base in just one inning.
Ryan Cavan's hitting streak ended at 19 games in the loss after he finished 0-for-4. The hitting streak was tied for the fifth-longest in San Jose Giants history.
The Mavericks jumped on Giants starter Clayton Blackburn for five runs over the first two frames. The game began with a single from Chris Taylor before Anthony Phillips was hit by a pitch. Ji-Man Choi then drew a walk to load the bases before Jabari Blash reached on a throwing error committed by third baseman Myles Schroder. Blash was credited with an RBI on the play as Taylor scored to give High Desert a 1-0 lead.
The rally continued as the next batter, Kevin Rivers, grounded into a fielder's choice as Blash was forced out, however Phillips scored to make it 2-0. Michael Dowd then lined an RBI single into left for a 3-0 advantage. After Mike McGee walked to load the bases, Dillon Hazlett hit into a fielder's choice as Rivers scored the fourth run of the frame. Blackburn threw 30 pitches in the top of the first.
The Mavericks added a run in the top of the second against Blackburn as Phillips drew a one-out walk before Choi clubbed an RBI double into the right center field gap.
Blackburn (2-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season after surrendering five runs (four earned) on five hits over four innings. He walked a career-high four and struck out four.
The Giants threatened in the bottom of the first against High Desert starter Chris Shore as Shawn Payne led off with a single before Devin Harris singled with two outs to put runners on the corners, however Mac Williamson grounded into a force out to end the inning.
San Jose's only hits for the remainder of the game were a Jeff Arnold one-out single in the bottom of the second and Chris Lofton's leadoff infield single in the sixth.
Shore worked the first 3 2/3 innings for High Desert allowing just three hits with no walks and three strikeouts. He was making his first start of the season after seven relief appearances. David Colvin (1-0), who relieved Shore with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, was credited with the win. Colvin tossed two scoreless innings and surrendered one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.
Luis Rojas (2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 SO) kept the Mavericks off the scoreboard in the fifth and sixth innings pitching around a leadoff double in both frames. Cody Hall (2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) then pitched the seventh and eighth to keep the deficit at 5-0. High Desert added to their lead in the ninth when Jeff Soptic (0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 0 SO) issued four straight walks to begin the inning. Bryce Bandilla (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) though limited the damage by striking out the next hitter before inducing a double play.
High Desert reliever Stephen Shackleford completed the shutout with a scoreless bottom of the ninth. Williamson drew a two-out walk, but Shackleford recovered to strikeout the next hitter, Villalona, to end the game.
