BAKERSFIELD, CA (May 10th, 2013) -- Bakersfield raced out to an early 5-0 lead, and held on late to defeat the Nuts, 6-3, on Friday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

With the win, the Blaze (9-24) were able to snap an eight-game losing streak in the first of four games against the Nuts (15-20).

After putting zeroes on the scoreboard through the first two innings, Nuts starter Tyler Gagnon (1-3) ran into trouble in the third. After loading the bases with no outs, Blaze infielder Ryan Wright doubled home two runs, and Marquez Smith made it 3-0 after an RBI groundout. Gagnon would battle to give the Nuts six innings, but gave up five earned runs on eight hits in the loss.

Yorman Rodriguez opened the fourth with a solo home run, and Wright added an RBI single in the fifth to make it 5-0.

After scuffling at the plate through the first five innings, Modesto finally broke through against Blaze starter Jake Johnson in the sixth. David Kandilas and Taylor Featherston came up with RBI singles to make it a 5-2 score.

Johnson (3-1) would last seven innings, allowing just the two runs for the victory.

Modesto pulled within two runs in the top of the eighth on an RBI groundout by Featherston, but the Blaze got it right back in the bottom of the inning on a single by Rodriguez against Kraig Sitton.

The Nuts put two on in the ninth with no outs against El'Hajj Muhammad, but the Blaze reliever got through the inning with no damage for his first save of the year.

Modesto will try to even things in game two of a four-game series on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. RHP Geoff Parker (2-2, 3.18) will make his first start of the season for the Nuts, opposite RHP Carlos Gonzalez for the Blaze (0-1, 1.40).
