Portland Stumbles into a Hot Everett Goaltender
March 1, 2020 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks out-shot Everett 39 to 24 on Sunday evening, but they drop the three-in-three finale in a 4-1 decision. The win extended Everett's streak to ten straight and they have won all four match-ups against Portland in 2020.
Everett scored twice in the first period to jump out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. Cole Fonstad scored on the red hot power play for Everett in the seventh minute of the game to end a personal ten game scoreless drought. Teammate Dawson Butt tacked on the other tally late in the first to put the home team up by two.
Both the Hawks and 'Tips found the back of the net in the second, but Everett was able to build on its lead. Kasper Puutio scored on the team's second power play of the night to go up 3-0, but Jake Gricius had a response of his own. He put the puck in on the man advantage for his 18th of the season to make it 3-1.
Portland closed the game with five straight power play chances, generating a handful of grade-A looks, but nothing got past Calgary Flames prospect Dustin Wolf in the second half of the game. Everett put in their fourth of the game in the final minute of the second period and they held on to Portland's late push, including four minutes with an extra attacker, to win and leap the Hawks in the Western Conference standings.
The Hawks fired 16 shots in the third period during their comeback effort, but they now turn the page to the next home game on Wednesday, March 4 against Tri-City at 7:00 p.m. Portland travels south to enjoy a three-game homestand.
