Portland Beavers News Release

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Frank Castillo threw seven scoreless innings and Chris Prieto went 2-for-3 to lead the Sacramento River Cats to a 7-0 win Tuesday night over the Portland Beavers.

Portland's loss was its fifth in its last six games and put the Beavers in third place in the Pacific Coast League's North Division for the second time this season.

Castillo (5-4) allowed just four hits, struck out two and walked one. Joe Valentine threw two innings of scoreless relief, fanning two and walking one.

Portland starter Mike Bynum scattered four hits and struck out seven through 4.2 innings, but his control-problems led to five River Cats runs. Bynum (4-8), who lost his sixth-straight decision, walked seven and hit a batter.

Sacramento scored its first run in the second inning. After Mike Rose and Prieto walked, Esteban German hit an RBI single up the middle, scoring Rose from second.

In the fifth, the River Cats took advantage of two walks and a hit-batsman to score five times. With two outs and the bases loaded, Rose drove in two runs with a single to left field, putting Sacramento up 3-0.

Following Rose's single, Kevin Walker replaced Bynum and gave up three more runs. He allowed a run-scoring double to Prieto and a two-RBI single to Esteban German, making it 6-0.

Sacramento added a run in the eighth on Bobby Crosby's RBI single off Cliff Bartosh.

Rose reached base four times for the River Cats, drawing three walks. Both Crosby and German had two hits for Sacramento.

NOTES: Bynum has not won since June 3, a string of eight appearances ... Portland's pitchers have issued 36 walks in the team's last 10 games ... Castro went 0-for-3, ending his six-game hitting streak ... the Beavers have managed just 13 hits in their past three games.
