Nashville Sounds News Release

The Nashville Sounds pitching staff will receive a couple of new faces later this week as a result of recent trades made by Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield.

Left-handed reliever Frank Brooks, acquired from Philadelphia for All-Star closer Mike Williams, and right-handed starter Matt Bruback, who was part of the Kenny Lofton-Aramis Ramirez trade with the Chicago Cubs, are en route to join the PCL East leaders.

Brooks, 24, attended Phillies' major league spring training as a non-roster invitee and began the season with Double-A Reading, where he went 3-4 with nine saves and a 2.30 ERA in 34 relief outings. He recorded saves in his final three outings with Reading (7/10, 7/12 & 7/17) before a promotion to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (AAA) on 7/18, but did not appear in a game for the Red Barons before being traded to the Pirates on 7/20.

In his first and only appearance with Altoona on 7/22 vs. New Haven, Brooks allowed two runs on three hits, including a home run, over 2 1/3 innings. In addition, he allowed all three of his inherited runners to score in the first inning of his outing. His first appearance with the Sounds will mark his career Triple-A debut.

The 6-foot-7, 24-year-old Bruback has posted a 6-8 record and 3.96 ERA in 20 outings (19 starts) for the Iowa Cubs (AAA) this season in his first year of Triple-A ball. The right-hander struggled in four starts against Nashville, however, going 0-4 with a 7.89 ERA (19er/21.2ip).

Neither player is expected to join the Sounds' active roster before Friday.
