Portland Winterhawks News Release
Rookies Tyson Yaremko (3A) and Kyle McDonough (2G, 1A) paced another dominant showing as the Winterhawks hammered the Seattle Thunderbirds 7-1 on the road on Saturday. Portland outshot Seattle 60-25 and scored all seven goals at even strength.
The Winterhawks have won six of their last seven games and their record now stands at 33-12-2-1 on the year (69pts, 1st Western Conference).
As he did in last night's 11-1 drubbing of Kelowna, Tyson Jugnauth opened the scoring early in the first period with a seeing-eye wrister from range at 2:30, with an assist to Yaremko. Diego Buttazzoni also scored for the second straight game at 5:47, finishing a perfect pass from Carter Sotheran, who posted two assists in the win.
Seattle netminder Scott Ratzlaff turned in a herculean effort to keep the game at 2-0 through 20 minutes, but Portland's onslaught continued in the second with its third four-goal period this weekend. McDonough nabbed the first, quickly depositing a Luca Cagnoni rebound in the slot at 2:54, before Gabe Klassen made it 4-0 at 5:17 after a Buttazzoni pass found him in the crease. James Stefan built off last night's hat-trick effort with a 2-on-1 rip again set up by Yaremko at 9:30, and Ryan Miller capped off the frame with a one-timer from Jugnauth at 10:42.
The T-Birds tallied early in the third through Eric Alarie's deflected shot, but McDonough responded at 8:08 with a dart from the right circle to put the game to bed. Yaremko notched his third helper on the play.
Starting for the second time in as many nights, Jan Špunar made 24 saves on 25 shots before making way for Luke Brunen to see some action when the game was firmly in hand. Seattle's Ratzlaff made 33 saves on 39 shots before Spencer Michnik stopped 20 of 21 in a third-period relief performance.
The Winterhawks now head home to conclude the three-in-three set against Tri-City for Hawks Fight Cancer night tomorrow at 5:00 in the VMC.
