Walleye Notes
Grab them All: Toledo made it a perfect week picking up five straight wins. Monday night Toledo held Elmira to just 21 shots in a 3-0 win. The very next night the Walleye erased a 4-2 deficit on the Nailers in a 5-4 shootout win. On Friday, Troy Schwab scored twice in a 3-1 win over Missouri. Saturday night was the Tyler Barnes show with a pair of goals and an assist to beat Kalamazoo 5-2. Sunday finished the week with an epic 2-1 shootout win for the Walleye over the Florida Everblades. AJ Jenks picked up the shootout game winner.
Lerg Sets a New Mark: The 21 save performance Monday in Elmira was the fourth shutout this season for goaltender Jeff Lerg. That set a new single season record for shutouts breaking the old record held by Tom McCollum of three in the 2010-11 season. Lerg also holds a Walleye record for wins at 27.
Shootout Dominance: Toledo picked up two more shootout wins this past week and owns a record of 8-2 in shootouts. The eight wins is the most by any team in the ECHL. Fort Wayne is second with six wins in shootouts. The last time the Walleye lost a shootout was January 4 to Fort Wayne.
No Seat to be found: A standing room only crowd of 7,812 filled the Huntington Center for Sunday's 2-1 shootout win over Florida. It was the 12th sellout crowd this year for the Walleye, tying the record set back in the 2009-10 season. Toledo ranks third among ECHL teams averaging 6,554 per home tilt.
Streaking Along: Toledo has gone eight consecutive games unbeaten in regulation (7-0-1-0). The longest such streak for the Walleye this season is nine straight games from December 30, 2014 until January 24, 2015.
No need for Penalties: Toledo and Kalamazoo went the entire game Saturday with no penalties called. It was just the fourth time in ECHL history and the first since the Pee Dee Pride at Augusta Lynx on March 30, 2003. The other contests were Florida vs. Tallahassee Tiger Sharks December 23, 1999 and Erie Panthers vs. Johnstown Chiefs March 14, 1990.
The Week Ahead: Wednesday night the Walleye travel to Wheeling to finish the season series with the Nailers. Toledo has a record of 5-1-0 against the Nailers. The hottest team in hockey will be in Toledo Friday night as the South Carolina Stingrays invade the Huntington Center. Stingrays have won 21 consecutive contests heading into the week (they play in Cincinnati on Wednesday). Earlier this season the Walleye defeated South Carolina three times. Saturday night is the final meeting this year between Toledo and Evansville and the first since November 22.
Walleye Player of the Week:
Tyler Barnes (6 goals - 3 assists = 9 points)
Walleye Goaltender of the Week:
Jeff Lerg (3-0-0, 0.65 GAA, .975 save %)
