Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Bowling Green, KY - For the second night in a row, the West Virginia Power pitching staff stalled the Bowling Green offense, as Aaron Pribanic and Gabriel Alvarado held the Hot Rods to just a pair of runs on seven hits at Bowling Green Ballpark on Friday night in a 6-2 Power victory.
West Virginia scored first for the fourth night in a row. Robbie Grossman began the fourth inning with a walk and scored on Tony Sanchez's triple to left center field. Kyle Morgan followed Sanchez with a two-run shot over the right field wall, his second of the series and his eighth of the season to give the Power a 3-0 lead. The Hot Rods scored their first run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning on Isaias Velasquez's infield single.
Morgan struck again for the Power in the top of the sixth inning when he ripped a double down the right field line to score Grossman. The Power scored two big insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. Bobby Spain extended his hitting streak to five games with a double down the right field line to score Quincy Latimore. Spain was on third with Austin McClune at the plate when West Virginia executed a squeeze to bring Spain home. The Hot Rods plated their final run in the bottom of the ninth when Justin Reynolds reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Mike Sheridan to score.
Pribanic (3-1) was outstanding for the second outing in a row. He allowed just a run on five hits over six strong innings in a winning effort. Gabriel Alvarado (2) scored the save after allowing a run on a pair of hits with five strikeouts over three innings of relief. Juan Santana (0-1) was tagged for a trio of runs on three hits in three innings of work and suffered the loss. The Power pitching staff allowed just two runs on ten hits over the final 21 innings of the series.
West Virginia improved to 61-66 overall, and 34-23 in the second half after the win, while the Hot Rods fell to 62-66 overall and 28-30 in the second half after the loss. Adenson Chourio and Kyle Morgan paced the Power with two hits a piece. Morgan has scored at least one time in his last five games and he's homered three times over his last three games. Tony Sanchez's triple in the fourth inning extended his hitting streak to five games and his on base streak to 14 while Bobby Spain's ninth inning double was his 23rd hit this month and extended his on base streak to eight games.
West Virginia will begin a three game series with the Hickory Crawdads at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday night. The Power will start right hander Quinton Miller (2-3, 5.16) and the Crawdads will counter with right hander Neil Ramirez (3-5, 4.33). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:05 PM.
