Pitchers Move, Mills Activated

June 29, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

The Aeros made a series of roster moves today as LHP Nick Hagadone was transferred to Class A Mahoning Valley, RHP Marty Popham was received from Class A Kinston and IF Beau Mills was activated from the disabled list.

Hagadone was tabbed as the third-best prospect in the Cleveland Indians system prior to the season by Baseball America and earned his promotion from Kinston to the Aeros on June 1st. In his five Double-A starts, he was 1-0 with a 6.16 ERA in 19 innings pitched. The 6'5" lefty underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2008 and turned 24 years old in January. The Indians acquired him along with Akron teammate RHP Bryan Price in a trade with the Boston Red Sox last July that sent former Eastern League MVP Victor Martinez to the Boston Red Sox. Hagadone is a product of the University of Washington and was selected in the sandwich round (#55 overall) in the June 2007 Draft.

Popham will start tonight for the Akron Aeros against the Richmond Flying Squirrels and began the 2010 season with the Class A Lake County Captains and was 3-1 with a 3.70 ERA in eight outings (four starts). He then earned the promotion to the Kinston Indians on May 22nd, making six starts but struggling with a 5.16 ERA. The 6'6" right-hander had a phenomenal year in 2009 with the short-season Class A Mahoning Valley Scrappers, posting a 2.76 ERA in 14 outings with 83 strikeouts against only 10 walks in 75 innings pitched. The Cleveland Indians selected 22-year-old Popham in the 20th round of the June 2008 Draft out of Union College (KY).

The first baseman Mills returns to the Aeros roster after missing the past 15 games with an intercostal strain. Cleveland's first round draft pick (13th overall) in the June 2007 Draft out of Lewis & Clark State, he was having a rough season offensively for Akron before moving to the disabled list. In 54 games played, the 23-year-old was batting just .205 with three home runs and 32 RBI and spent the entire 2009 season with the Aeros as well. He batted .267 in 134 games played last season and was the 2008 Carolina League MVP with the Class A Kinston Indians.

Akron's roster is now complete at 24 men and Popham will be wearing #51. The Aeros hope to snap a four-game losing streak tonight with Popham on the starting mound at The Diamond in Richmond at 7:05 p.m.
