Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Akron Aeros threw the final blow in a back-and-forth affair that they claimed, 4-3, over the Richmond Flying Squirrels in front of 3,688 on Tuesday night at The Diamond. The win snapped Richmond's four-game winning-steak and also the Aeros' four-game losing-streak.

The Aeros jumped on top quickly against Squirrels' right-hander Daryl Maday in the first inning. With one out, Jason Kipnis slugged a solo-home run on a high-arch to right field for a 1-0 Akron lead.

Richmond pulled even in the second against Akron righty Marty Popham. Roger Kieschnick led off the inning with a single back through the middle. Conor Gillaspie singled to right field to move Kieschnick to second base and Jackson Williams tied the ballgame with a single pushed through the hole on the right-side of the infield.

Both starters settled into a groove and the ballgame continued at a 1-1 score through six innings. Popham called it a night after six innings, recording a no-decision despite a sterling performance. He allowed just the lone run on five hits, walking none and striking out six. He retired the final 11 batters that he faced.

Maday had also retired 11 straight as he entered the seventh inning. He found trouble there, allowing a one-out single Matt McBride. Beau Mills followed with a single to move McBride to third base. He scored from there for a 2-1 lead when John Drennen doubled to right field.

The Squirrels quickly came to Maday's aid in the bottom of the inning. Michael Ambort started the uprising with a lead-off single off of reliever Zach Putnam. Conor Gillaspie the delivered a hit-and-run double to tie the game, 2-2. A batter later, Clay Timpner delivered the lead when he plated Gillaspie with a single over a drawn-in infield.

The lead didn't last long for Richmond as Maday returned to start the eighth. Damaso Espino notched a single to start the inning. Cristo Arnal followed and Maday threw away his sacrifice bunt. His error allowed the runners to second and third with nobody down. Maday departed and left-hander Jake Stevens entered to concede the game-winning single to Jordan Henry. Henry scored both runners to cap the scoring, 4-3.

Maday (8-5) was charged with both runs and endured a tough-loss. He worked seven-plus innings, allowing four runs - three earned - on eight hits. He walked none and struck out one as he dropped his fifth decision of the season.

Right-hander Bryce Stowell thwarted any comeback plans for Richmond as he closed out the ballgame by striking out the final four Squirrels for his seventh save of the season.

The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Wednesday night at The Diamond. RHP David Mixon (8-3, 3.07) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Alex White (2-4, 1.77) for Akron.
