Pit Spitters Strike Late to Take Game One Versus Rivets

July 27, 2019 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Traverse City Pit Spitters News Release

Traverse City, MI - The force was with the Pit Spitters on Star Wars night, as they pushed the winning run across in the bottom of the eighth inning, to take a 5-4 victory in game one of a two game home series with the Rockford Rivets.

The Pit Spitters staked out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning behind three runs and three walks against Rivets starter Jordan Nelson. The team sent eight men to the plate in the inning and scored three runs on a Hudson Byorick (JR Wofford) double that got to the wall.

The Rivets would make a comeback however, answering back with one run in the third inning and plating three in the sixth against Pit Spitters reliever Jon Beuckelaere (JR Madonna.) A two-out, two-run single by shortstop Caleb Durbin tied the game.

From there, it was all Luke Little (FR San Jacinto.) The left-handed reliever came out of the Pit Spitters bullpen and threw three scoreless innings, allowing only one walk while striking out five. He kept the score tied long enough for the Pit Spitters to push home the go-ahead run on a Ryan Hampe (FR UIC) RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning. The win takes Little's record to 3-0 on the campaign.

The Pit Spitters return to action Sunday with a 6:00 p.m. rematch against the Rockford Rivets. Every Sunday is "Sermons and Strikeouts," at Pit Spitters Park, with anyone who brings their church or community bulletin to the box office receiving half off tickets. Gates will open at 5:00 p.m.
