Pirates Recap
The Pirates began a busy four-game week on Tuesday when the Worcester Sharks came to town for the third game of the 2010-11 UNUM Challenge. Portland would get on the board first with a Corey Tropp power play goal, but it was all Worcester from that point on. The Sharks reeled off four unanswered goals, and the Pirates could only manage a late power-play goal by Matt Ellis to set the final margin at 4-2. With the win, Worcester leads the UNUM Challenge 2-1.
Friday night was the start of a full weekend slate on the road for Portland as they headed to Providence to take on the Bruins. Prior to Friday night's game the Pirates held a 5-6-0-0 mark on the road compared to a 9-2-1-1 home record. In a reverse series of events from Tuesday's game, Portland let up an early first period goal to Bruins forward Jordan Lavallee-Smotherman then reeled off five straight goals to come out victorious 5-1. Maxime Legault led the Portland attack with the first two-goal game of his career. Other Pirates to score included Jacob Lagace, Drew Schiestel, and Matt Ellis.
The following night Portland would head up to Glens Falls, NY to take on the Adirondack Phantoms. Backed by a strong effort by goaltender Jhonas Enroth, the Pirates came back in the third period with goals by Paul Byron and Derek Whitmore to top the Phantoms 2-1 and sweep the two-game season series. Enroth stopped 27 of 28 shots enroute to his eighth win of the season.
To cap off the weekend, a battle for first-place ensued as the Manchester Monarchs welcomed the Pirates to the Verizon Wireless Arena in a Sunday afternoon showdown. Following a 6-1 setback in Manchester two weekends prior, the Pirates rebounded nicely with a solid all-around effort. Led by two Derek Whitmore power-play goals and solid net presence by David Leggio, the Pirates would move into a tie for first-place with the Monarchs with a 4-2 victory. Maxime Legault and Colin Stuart also scored for Portland who enter this week with a 17-8-1-1 record.
