Pirates Fall to UNB in Preseason Scrimmage

Saco, ME - The Portland Pirates (1-1-0-0 preseason) fell to the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds 5-3 in a preseason scrimmage at OA Performance Center in Saco on Thursday. The game had a back-and-forth feel throughout the first and second periods. It was the second and final preseason contest for the Pirates, who open up the regular season on the road against the Providence Bruins at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence on Sunday, October 10 at 3:05 p.m.

The Pirates opened the scoring at 7:12 in the first when Wade Simpson found the back of the net with help from Chase Bailsy and Corbin Knight. UNB rebutted a little over a minute later with a 8:32 goal from Cameron Brace, assisted by Dylan Willick and Matt Boudens. Knight nabbed the go-ahead for the Pirates at 11:35, assisted by Logan Shaw and Vinny Saponari. The Varsity Reds tied the game 2-2 at 16:05 on Brace's second goal of the night, assisted by Cam Critchlow and Alex Wall.

Michael Matheson gave the Pirates the 3-2 advantage midway through the second period at 10:08, with Saponari and MacKenzie Weegar recording assists. The Pirates would hold the lead through the remainder of the second period, relinquishing it to a trio of UNB goals in the third.

Willick tied it up for the Varsity Reds at 1:47, an unassisted goal. Philippe Halley got the go-ahead at 4:09 with help from Peter Trainor and Philippe Maillet. Maillet scored a goal of his own at 7:17 to make it 5-3 Varsity Reds with assists from Brace and Jordan Murray.

Sam Brittain (0-1-0 preseason) started in net for the Pirates, saving 21 of 26 shots. Etienne Marcoux stood in goal for the first two periods for the Varsity Reds. Marcoux saved 18 of 21 shots. Alex Dubeau took over net in the third period, saving 12 of 12.

The Pirates will continue practicing and preparing for the regular season for the remainder of training camp at OA Performance Center in Saco. Practice on Saturday, October 3 will include a full team scrimmage at 11:30 a.m. followed by an autograph session with the team. Practice will be free and open to the public. The Pirates travel to Providence, RI on Sunday, October 10 to take on the Providence Bruins. Portland's Home Opener will take place on Saturday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. against the Hershey Bears at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. For tickets and more information, call 207-PIRATES.
