Bristol State Liners News Release

The Bristol Pirates came up a run short in the series finale with the Elizabethton Twins, as they fell 4-3 on Sunday night.

All four of the Twins runs came in the third inning on back-to-back two-out hits -- a two-run triple by right fielder Matt Wallner and a two-run home run by Max Smith. Shortstop Francisco Acuna drove in the first run for Bristol on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, and back-to-back RBI doubles by designated hitter Samuel Inoa and Acuna in the sixth inning would drive in the final runs of the game.

Starter Jose Maldonado suffered his fourth straight loss, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts over four innings of work. Luis Arrieta, Yordi Rosario, C.J. Dandeneau and Alex Roth combined to throw five shutout innings against Elizabethton, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out six.

Right fielder Fernando Villegas led the Pirates with his second three-hit performance in his last four games, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Inoa was the only other Pirate with a multi-hit performance, as he ended the night 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Acuna's double was his 13th of the season -- moving him into a tie for first place in the Appalachian League -- while his two RBI in the loss moved him into first place on the team with 17 RBI.

The Pirates (18-20) dropped to three games behind Johnson City and Elizabethton for first place in the Appalachian League West Division. Bristol will have an off day on Monday before returning to Boyce Cox Field on Tuesday night to open a three-game series with the Greeneville Reds.
