JOHNSON CITY - The Johnson City Cardinals earned their second sweep of the season Sunday at TVA Credit Union Ballpark, finishing off the Reds 6-2. The Cardinals enjoy an off day Monday and head to Princeton Tuesday through Thursday.
Jose Moreno (3-3) earned the win by limiting the Reds to two runs (two earned) over five innings. The right-hander scattered nine hits while striking out two and issuing one walk. Greeneville starter Juan Abril (1-4) lasted two innings, allowing five runs (three earned) in the second on his way to the loss.
The Cards took advantage of a pair of Reds errors in the second. Diomedes Del Rio recorded a two-RBI single, and Raffy Ozuna added a two-RBI double. Greeneville would go on to commit six errors in the game.
Trejyn Fletcher added an RBI base hit in the fourth to extend the home team's lead to 6-1. The Cardinals are now 12-6 at home this season. The sweep was the second of the season for the team and its first since a three-game drubbing of Kingsport June 28-30. Both sweeps have come at TVA Credit Union Ballpark.
Walker Robbins, John Witkowski, and Wilfredo Pereira combined to fire four innings of scoreless relief to finish the game. Johnson City pitchers limited the Reds to just a 2-for-12 mark with runners in scoring position. The Reds left 11 total aboard in the game. The Cards took the series finale despite being outhit 12-7. With Elizabethton defeating Bristol 4-3, the Cardinals (21-17) remain in a tie with the Twins (21-17) for first place in the Appalachian West.
The Cardinals will enjoy the penultimate scheduled off day of the 2019 season Monday. The team heads to Princeton to meet the Rays (18-20) for the first time starting Tuesday. Michael YaSenka (1-1, 0.68 ERA) is expected to get the start for Johnson City. The Princeton starter is TBA. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. ET.
The Cardinals return for a seven-game homestand starting Friday, August 2nd vs. Bluefield. The evening will feature a Steve Spurrier Bobblehead Giveaway to the first 750 fans through the gates.
