Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Pacific Coast League announced on Tuesday that Tacoma Rainiers right-hander Michael Pineda has been selected as the PCL Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 28-July 4.
Pineda, 21, made two starts for the Rainiers over that span, combining to strike out 21 batters over appearances at Sacramento and Salt Lake.
The right-hander became the first Rainiers starter to record 10 or more strikeouts in a game since Brandon Morrow in 2008 after fanning 11 against Sacramento on June 28. Pineda finished the night giving up three runs on seven hits over six innings in a no decision.
Pineda followed the outing with a nearly flawless performance in a win at Salt Lake on July 4. The 21-year-old retired the first 18 batters he faced over six perfect innings against the Bees before surrendering a single to outfielder Peter Bourjos to lead off the seventh. He ended the effort allowing two runs on three hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts over seven innings.
Signed by the Mariners as a non-drafted free agent in 2005, Pineda is 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA over three starts as a Rainier in his first season at Tacoma. The Dominican-native began his 2010 campaign starting 13 games with Double-A West Tennessee, where he went 8-1 with a 2.22 ERA while walking 17 and fanning 78.
Pineda is the second Rainier to garner the weekly league award this season. Left-hander Chris Seddon was selected as the PCL Pitcher of the Week earlier last month after tossing 14 scoreless innings and recording two wins over two pitching appearances, June 14-20.
