Red-Hot Arencibia, Flame-Throwing Pineda Named Player, Pitcher Of The Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - J.P. Arencibia, the PCL's starting catcher in the Triple-A All- Star Game on July 14, and Michael Pineda, one of baseball's rising pitching phenoms, were named the Pacific Coast League's Player and Pitcher of the Week Tuesday. The awards were given for games played from Monday, June 28 through Sunday, July 4.
Arencibia, the No. 21-overall pick in the 2007 first-year player draft, belted four home runs and drove in 12 runs for the Las Vegas 51s, compiling a .423 batting average (11-for-26). He put together multi-hit performances in each of the first five games of the week, giving him a streak of seven-straight multi-hit games dating back to June 25, while his four homers gave him six in the span of eight games. In a 30-day stretch from June 5 through July 4, Arencibia hit an astounding .427 (44-for-103) with 13 homers, 30 RBI, 29 runs and 14 doubles in just 24 games.
Hailing from Miami, Fla., the former Tennessee Volunteer was listed as the No. 2 prospect in the Toronto Blue Jays organization by Baseball America entering the 2010 season. After homering Sunday, Arencibia matched his 2009 total with 21 long balls, and is now just six home runs shy of his career-high of 27, which he set in 2008 between Class-A Dunedin and Double-A New Hampshire.
The 21-year-old Pineda earned his first PCL Pitcher of the Week award in just his second week at the Triple-A level, solidifying his place as the Seattle Mariners' top young pitching prospect. In just his second and third starts for the Rainiers, the 6-foot-5 Pineda went 1-0 with a 3.46 ERA, striking out 21 batters and walking two in 13 innings.
Pineda opened the week on June 28 in Sacramento, striking out 11 and walking just one in six innings of a no-decision. Then, on July 4 in Salt Lake, the Dominican-born right-hander carried a perfect game into the seventh inning, finishing the game with 10 strikeouts, one walk and just three hits allowed in the victory. Between Double-A West Tennessee and Triple-A Tacoma, Pineda is now 10-1 with a 2.25 ERA, striking out 104 and walking 22 in 96 innings of work.
