Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
EASTLAKE, Ohio - TinCaps starting pitcher Enmanuel Pinales threw seven quality innings, but the Lake County Captains (Guardians affiliate) won Tuesday night's series-opener at Classic Auto Group Park, 1-0. The pitchers' duel took just 2 hours and 4 minutes to complete.
Pinales was through 6 2/3 scoreless innings until Captains (35-23) third baseman José Devers (No. 19 Guardians prospect) hit an 0-2 pitch over the left-center field fence. For the 21-year-old cousin of Boston Red Sox All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers, it was his fifth homer of the season. Pinales, 23, retired the next batter to conclude his second seven-inning start of the season. All said, he allowed a total of four hits and no walks while striking out five batters, using 90 pitches (62 strikes).
For the year, Pinales, a native of the Dominican Republic, ranks third in the High-A Midwest League in ERA (2.79), fourth in WHIP (0.99), and seventh in strikeouts (55). The league is hitting only .177 against him. That's the lowest batting average against among all qualified pitchers by .28 points.
At the plate, the TinCaps (25-33) were facing Austin Peterson, who worked 5 2/3 innings to lower his ERA to 2.69 - good for second lowest in the circuit.
Center fielder Homer Bush Jr. (No. 8 Padres prospect) recorded three hits, including a double, as he extended his on-base streak to 17 games, the longest for a TinCap this season.
Meanwhile, third baseman Devin Ortiz added a pair of singles and shortstop Jay Beshears (No. 27 Padres prospect) also had a knock. However, the 'Caps went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left six on base - not including a pair of runners thrown out on the bases and a ground ball double play with the bases loaded that ended the game.
Lake County is currently in first place in the MWL's East Division, as the first half of the season concludes June 20.
