Mathews' Gem Guides Peoria to 5-2 Win Over Cubs

PEORIA, IL - Quinn Mathews spun his third consecutive quality start to guide the Chiefs to a 5-2 win over the Cubs.

After Mathews gave up a leadoff single in the first, the left-hander did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. He pitched six scoreless frames with eight strikeouts to earn his second High-A win of the year. In 61 2/3 innings so far this season, Mathews has a 2.04 ERA and 92 strikeouts between Low-A and High-A.

Peoria struck first with a two-run second inning. Dakota Harris recorded a one-out double and Joshua Baez blasted his seventh home run of the season to make the score 2-0. The Chiefs added on an insurance run in the sixth inning after Harris took the first pitch of the inning over the wall.

The Cubs scored their first two runs in the game in the eighth inning off reliever Osvaldo Berrios. The right-hander surrendered two runs, one earned, with three strikeouts in two innings of relief.

In the home half of the eighth, the Chiefs answered right back with two runs of their own. Baez singled to lead off the inning and Zach Levenson hit his first triple of the year to make the score 4-2. Alex Iadisernia added one more run with a sacrifice fly.

Tanner Jacobson shut the door in the ninth inning with a 1-2-3 frame. The right-hander earned his second save of the season with only 10 pitches.

Mathews earned his second High-A win of the season to lower his Peoria ERA to 2.61. The Peoria pitching staff struck out 12 batters with only one walk induced.

With the win, the Chiefs have won five of their last seven games. Wednesday's first pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. Inohan Paniagua will make the start for Peoria. The right-hander has a 1.67 ERA with a 0.93 WHIP at Dozer Park this season.
