KINSTON, N.C. - Konnor Pilkington allowed just one earned run across seven strong innings, but the Dash fell to the Down East Wood Ducks 2-0 on Monday night at Grainger Stadium.
After striking out 12 Wood Ducks (7-5, 57-25) on May 19 at Grainger Stadium, Pilkington (1-4) once again had a strong effort against Down East. The Dash (4-8, 42-34) left-hander finished the night allowing just the one earned run on six hits while striking out four compared to two walks.
Down East scored its only run against Pilkington in the bottom of the fourth. To start the frame, Diosbel Arias and Yanio Perez hit back-to-back singles. Following a Curtis Terry flyout, Yohel Pozo grounded out to advance Arias to third and Perez to second. With JP Martinez at the plate, Pilkington balked, allowing Arias to score and give the Wood Ducks a 1-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Winston-Salem was unable to plate a run against Down East starter Alex Eubanks (7-2). Eubanks allowed just three hits across five innings while striking out four and walking two. The Dash had their best chance to score in the top of the fifth, as Carlos Perez and Craig Dedelow hit back-to-back singles to start the inning, but Eubanks recorded three straight outs.
The Wood Ducks added an insurance run against Dash reliever Kevin Escorcia in the bottom of the eighth, as Perez singled to score Arias and push the lead to two runs.
In relief of Eubanks, Jairo Beras and Joe Kuzia combined to toss four scoreless innings. Mitch Roman led off the top of the ninth with a bunt single, but Kuzia recored three straight outs to end the ballgame.
The Dash continue their series with the Wood Ducks on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Right-hander Zach Lewis (4-3, 6.50 ERA) will take the mound for Winston-Salem against left-hander John King (2-0, 1.07 ERA).
