Lancaster Stormers News Release

Matt Pike fired a complete game five-hitter as Bridgeport dumped Lancaster, 7-1, Friday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

The loss was the Barnstormers' third straight, matching their longest skid of the season.

Pike (7-2) allowed five hits and walked one while striking out just two. He needed 93 pitches to complete the gem which was spoiled by Adam Calderone's one-out solo homer to right in the seventh.

The Bridgeport right-hander was aided by sparkling defense from his infield that included snags of three line drives over the last three innings. Second baseman Angel Chavez snared a Brandon Jones liner for the final out in the seventh with a leaping grab. Luis Lopez dove to his left to latch onto a hit-and-run liner off the bat of Matt Tupman for a double play to close the eighth, and Tommy Everidge was denied a base hit up the middle on a dive by Chavez for the final out of the game.

Danny Putnam produced a 1-0 lead for Bridgeport with a leadoff homer in the fourth inning off Cesar Carrillo (2-8). Angel Chavez keyed two additional fourth inning runs with a double to right center.

Moss had an RBI double down the left field line in the seventh and later scored on a bloop single to right by Lopez. Wes Bankston slammed a two-run homer to left in the ninth for the final margin.

The game was marred by two bench-clearing incidents. Putnam was nailed by a Carrillo pitch the first time he came to the plate after the home run. Then, Pike drilled Watson in the knee with his first pitch in the bottom of the fifth, knocking Watson out of the game. At that point, benches cleared, but no punches were thrown. Plate umpire James Pattison warned both sides.

The situation was not totally diffused. Carrillo sent a pitch over the head of Angel Berroa to start the seventh, and both sides came out again. Berroa was quickly calmed down by Matt Tupman and Yunior Novoa. Other discussions grew heated, but, again, no physical contact was made, and no one was tossed from the game.

Lancaster will wrap up the series with Bridgeport on Saturday evening at 6:30. Ross Peeples (7-4) will pitch for the Barnstormers, and Paul Oseguera (6-3) will counter for the Bluefish. Fireworks will follow. The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed live on sportsjuice.com and ibnsports.com.
