Crabs Snap Skid; Win 5-3

Waldorf, MD-The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs snapped their seven-game losing streak and picked up their first win of the second half as they defeated the Somerset Patriots 5-3 in front of 4, 357 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium on Friday night.

The Blue Crabs did it in come from behind fashion as Somerset picked up single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Centerfielder Joe Holden had a sac fly in the third, while third baseman Jeff Nettles (11) smacked a solo homer in the fourth for the advantage.

But Southern Maryland came back in the bottom of the fourth as an RBI double by third baseman Kody Kirkland and an RBI groundout by leftfielder Ben Harrison tied the game. The Blue Crabs took the lead in the sixth as a bunt single by Brian Barton was thrown away by Nettles, which allowed second baseman Bridger Hunt to scored from second and give Southern Maryland their first lead of the game.

The Blue Crabs added two insurance runs in the seventh on an RBI double from centerfielder Jeremy Owens and an RBI fielder's choice by Hunt to extend the lead to 5-2.

A sac fly by Somerset catcher John Pachot drew the Patriots to within two in the ninth inning; but with two on and two out, Blue Crabs closer Jim Ed Warden got shortstop Daniel DeGeorge to ground out to end the game and the losing streak.

Southern Maryland got two hits apiece from Owens and Kirkland as each had a double and RBI. Nettles led the way for Somerset by going 2-4 with a homer, RBI and two runs scored, while DeGeorge chipped in with two singles.

The star for Southern Maryland was starting pitcher Michael Schlact wo allowed only two runs on four hits in seven innings of work. He got the win to move to 5-1. The loss went to Somerset starter Derrick Gordon (6-1) who had garnered six wins in six appearances before tonight's game. The save went to Jim Ed Warden (17), which was his first since July 5th. He is now 17-18 in save opportunities this season.

Southern Maryland and Somerset will square off in the rubber game of their three-game series on Saturday at 6:35. The Blue Crabs will send righty Nick Green (5-4, 4.25 ERA) to the hill against fellow righty Nic Ungs (3-5, 4.54 ERA) of the Patriots. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
