Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs and Scranton-Wilkes/Barre RailRiders wrap up their early season Iron Rail Rivalry series at 6:35 p.m. tonight at PNC Field. The Railriders have taken the first two games of the series including a come-from-behind win yesterday thanks to a three-run seventh-inning home run by Ryan McBroom to break a 2-2 tie.
Right-hander Jake Thompson will make his first start of the 2018 season for the Pigs and will be opposed by Chance Adams for the Railriders. Tonight's starting pitching matchup is presented by Allentown Family Footcare, which provides the latest in medical and surgical treatments of the entire foot and ankle. Learn more at affc.com.
Thompson is making his 2018 IronPigs debut tonight after being optioned earlier this week when the Phillies activated Jake Arrieta. The Dallas native made his first Opening Day roster in 2018 as a member of the Phillies bullpen. The 2016 IL Pitcher of the Year appeared in two games for the Phillies including three shutout innings against the Marlins that led to his first career big league save. In 2017 with the Pigs, Thompson went 5-14 with a 5.25 ERA in 22 starts before earning a promotion to Philadelphia to finish the year.
Adams is a top-100 prospect according to MLB Pipeline and No. 6 in the Yankees organization. The 2017 MiLB.com Organizational All-Star and a former fifth-round pick out of Dallas Baptist, Adams started Opening Day for the RailRiders, going 3.2 innings and allowing four runs in a no-decision. After making six starts in Trenton last season, Adams was promoted to Triple-A and made 21 starts for the RailRiders including two regular season starts against the Pigs and one in Game 2 of the ILDS. The 23-year-old finished 2017 with a combined record of 15-5 with a 2.45 ERA.
Roman Quinn is off to a hot start setting the table for the IronPigs. Quinn reached base four times - two singles and two walks -- in yesterday's loss to the Railriders. Quinn was responsible for both of the Pigs runs in the ballgame as he drove in one and scored the other. The 24-year-old has hit safely in all three games he has played with a .333 average, a 4.29 OBP and two stolen bases.
Last Night: It was a debut to remember for 22-year-old Enyel De Los Santos who made his Triple-A and Phillies organizational debut. Lighting up the radar gun and silencing the RailRiders bats, De Los Santos struck out five RailRiders in the first two innings and seven in five innings. De Los Santos tossed five strong innings and was in position to pick up the victory when he exited the game.
McBroom's homer off of Tom Windle in the bottom of the seventh was the deciding factor. Brady Lail (1-0) earned his first win of the season while Tyler Viza (0-1) took the loss. Cale Coshow pitched the final two innings, striking out four, en route to the save. The RailRiders will be looking to sweep the IronPigs tonight.
The Pigs return home to beautiful Coca-Cola Park tomorrow for their home opener vs. the Louisville Bats. Tickets are still available for the 7:05 p.m. contest. Gates will open for the Opening Night Party at 5 p.m.
