McBroom's Late Homer Lifts RailRiders over Pigs
April 11, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
A seventh-inning home run by the Scranton-Wilkes/Barre RailRiders lifted them to a 5-2 victory over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in Tuesday's Iron Rail Series matchup.
A three-run home run by Ryan McBroom off of Tom Windle in the bottom of the seventh was the difference. Brady Lail (1-0) earned his first win of the season while Tyler Viza (0-1) took the loss. Cale Coshow pitched the final two innings, striking out four, en route to the save.
It was a debut to remember for 22-year-old Enyel De Los Santos who made his Triple-A and Phillies organizational debut. Lighting up the radar gun and silencing the RailRiders bats, De Los Santos struck out five RailRiders in the first two innings and seven in five innings. De Los Santos tossed five strong innings and was in position to pick up the victory when he exited the game.
Roman Quinn was back in the leadoff spot for the IronPigs and set the table for the Pigs offense all evening. Quinn reached base four times - two singles and two walks - scored one run and drove in the Pigs' other run. He now has a three-game hitting streak to start the 2018 season.
With the no score in the third inning, Quinn singled through the hole on the right side to score Logan Moore and put the Pigs up 1-0. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre evened the score in the bottom of the inning on a Kyle Higashioka RBI single.
The teams stayed tied until the sixth when a Dylan Cozens sacrifice fly brought Roman Quinn home. The RailRiders quickly answered again with a run in the bottom half of the inning.
The Pigs had an opportunity to take control and throw up a crooked number against the RailRiders pen in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded and one down in the inning, Lail got back-to-back punch-outs to keep the game tied at two. The IronPigs finished the ballgame 2-10 with runners in scoring position and left eight on base.
The Pigs were unable to escape a similar jam in the bottom half of the frame as McBroom's three-run shot gave the home team the separation it needed.
The Railriders (4-1) have now taken the first two games of the Iron Rail Classic. The Pigs (1-3) and RailRiders will meet 18 more times including tomorrow night's 6:35 p.m. contest in Scranton. Drew Anderson get the start for the Pigs in his 2018 debut.
The Pigs return home on Thursday, April 12, for their home opener vs. the Louisville Bats. Tickets for the 7:05 p.m. contest are available at the Coca-Cola Park ticket window and at IronPigsBaseball.com.
