From the Notes
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Mud Hens used the same formula from their series-opening win to take Game 2 of the three-game set last night by a 9-6 final. Toledo scored six runs in the first on Monday night and followed that up with a four-run first last night, all of the runs coming on a grand slam by first baseman Jim Adduci. The Tribe never recovered but did pull close on two occasions. Indy used Max Moroff and Austin Meadows RBI singles and a Jose Osuna bases-loaded walk in the third to cut its deficit to two at 5-3, but the visitors pushed back with four unanswered runs to grow their lead to six at 9-3. The Indians rallied in the bottom of the ninth thanks to Moroff and Meadows RBI knocks again, but Osuna - representing the tying run at the plate - flew out to deep right for the final out of the ballgame. Casey Sadler was handed the loss after allowing nine runs (five earned) on 11 hits over 4.1 innings pitched. Richard Rodriguez (2.2ip, 1h, 0r, 2bb, 4k) and Johnny Hellweg (2.0ip, 0h, 0r, 1bb, 2k) continued their strong individual starts to the 2018 campaign in the defeat.
MOROFF, MEADOWS DOING THEIR PART: Max Moroff and Austin Meadows combined for four RBI singles in last night's 9-6 loss. Moroff is batting .389 (7-for-18) with five RBI while Meadows owns a .353 average (6-for-17) with three RBI in four starts.
JACOB'S WORLD: Last year Jacob Stallings owned Toledo pitchers, posting a .356 average (16-for-45) with three doubles in 12 games. He also recorded 12 of his 38 total RBI against the Mud Hens, his second-highest total against any team in the IL in 2017 (had 13 RBI vs. Columbus). He continued to punish Mud Hens pitching Monday night, going 1-for-2 while recording his third straight multi-RBI game.
MULTI-RBI MACHINE: Stallings' stretch of three consecutive two-RBI games marks the second time in his career where he's accomplished the feat. Back in 2014 with High-A Bradenton, Stallings totaled five, three and two RBI in three straight games from Aug. 24-28. His six RBI on the season are tied with Toledo's Jim Adduci for second on the International League leaderboard.
STAFF STRIKEOUTS: The Tribe pitching staff has racked up double-digit strikeout totals in four of their five games played thus far, posting 15, 16, 10, 6 and 11 strikeouts in succession. Their 58 strikeouts on the young season pace all International League teams. On the flipside, the Indians' pitching staff leads the league in most hits allowed (57), runs allowed (36), earned runs allowed (25), home runs surrendered (4), hit batsmen (4) and is second in most walks issued (23).
DH'S DOING WORK: Through five games this year, Indy's designated hitters (Max Moroff, Jerrick Suiter, Erich Weiss) have raked to the tune of a combined .467 average (7-for-15) with four doubles, two triples, four RBI, six runs scored and five walks against just three strikeouts.
KING(HAM) OF THE HILL: Tribe starter Nick Kingham picked up where he left off from his 2017 campaign, throwing five innings of one-hit ball on Opening Night with 10 strikeouts. Despite his strong performance, Indy's bullpen yielded a total of 11 runs over the final four innings -- including nine in the sixth -- to leave Kingham with no decision. His 10-K game was the second of his career and first since April 28, 2013 with High-A Bradenton. Since July 24, 2017 -- a span of 10 starts (including postseason) -- Kingham owns a 2.57 ERA (18 ER/63.0 IP).
HEAD-TO-HEAD: In the last nine seasons, Indy has lost the season series against Toledo just one time (2014, 10-11). The Indians own a 122-81 (.601) record against the Mud Hens at Victory Field and lead the series (since 1988) by a comfortable 35-game margin (218-183, .544).
