Pigs Drop Series Opener to RailRiders, 5-2

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (10-8) dropped the series opener to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (9-9) by a score of 5-2 on Monday night at PNC Field in Moosic.

Solo shots from Nick Swisher and Jose Rosario in the home half of the second off of IronPigs starter Jake Thompson gave the RailRiders a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Ben Gamel and Donovan Solano started the inning with back-to-back singles before Gary Sanchez plated both with a two-run double to give Scranton/Wilkes Barre a 4-0 advantage. Sanchez later scored on Chris Parmelee's RBI single to make it 5-0 in favor of the RailRiders.

Thompson (1-3) surrendered the five runs on eight hits while fanning six over five innings of work.

The Pigs cut the lead to 5-1 with a run in the fourth as Andrew Knapp drove a one-out triple into the left centerfield gap and later scored on Tommy Joseph's (2-3, RBI) RBI infield single.

Lehigh Valley's Nick Williams cut the lead to 5-2 with his first career Triple-A home run, a solo shot off of Scranton starter Anthony Swarzak in the sixth.

Swarzak (1-2) gave up two runs on five hits to go along with six strikeouts over his 7.0 IP. LHP James Pazos (1.0 IP, K) retired the side in order in the ninth to notch his first save of the year.

Taylor Featherston was 0-4 and saw his hitting streak come to an end at 13 games for the IronPigs. However, Cam Perkins (1-3, 2B) extended his hitting streak to 10 with a double in the second.

RHP Colton Murray (2.0 IP, 2 K) and LHP James Russell (1.0 IP, H, K) each had a scoreless outing in relief for Lehigh Valley.

The series continues on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. as LHP Adam Morgan (1-1, 3.57) gets the ball for the Pigs against RailRiders RHP Luis Cessa (0-0, 3.00).
