Phoenix's Kowalski Named Reebok ECHL Goaltender Of The Week

PRINCETON, N.J. - Craig Kowalski of the Phoenix RoadRunners is the Reebok ECHL Goaltender of the Week for the period of Jan. 19-25. It is the second time this season and the fourth time overall that he has been chosen for the honor.

Kowalski was 2-0-0 with a goals-against average of 1.00 and a save percentage of .969 in two games at Stockton. He stopped 33 shots and had the primary assist on the game-winning shorthand goal as the RoadRunners ended Stockton's seven-game winning streak with a 4-1 win on Friday. Kowalski then made 29 saves in a 5-1 win on Sunday to extend his winning streak to four games.

He is 14-11-1 and is fourth in the league with 836 saves and fifth with 1,491 minutes. His save percentage of .920 is tied for eighth in the ECHL and his goals-against average of 2.94 is 18th.

The 27 year old was voted to be a starter in the 2008 ECHL All-Star Game and was named Second Team All-ECHL after going 29-11-2 with two shutouts, a goals-against average of 2.33 and a save percentage of .923 in 44 regular season games for Gwinnett. He also played for Syracuse in the AHL and was 2-1-0 with a shutout, a goals-against average of 2.36 and a save percentage of .923 in four games.

Selected in the eighth round (235th overall) by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Kowalski played his first three seasons with the Florida Everblades and was 54-25-10 with five shutouts, a goals-against average of 2.72 and a save percentage of .914 in 91 regular season games. He was 29-13-4 with three shutouts, a goals-against average of 2.61 and a save percentage of .918 in 46 regular season games in 2006-07 and was 10-6 with two shutouts, a goals-against average of 2.36 and a save percentage of .921 in the Kelly Cup Playoffs as the Everblades reached the American Conference Finals.

- There are 18 former ECHL officials scheduled to work as part of the NHL officiating team in 2008-09 with referees David Banfield, Chris Ciamaga, Ghislain Hebert, Marc Joannette, Mike Leggo, Wes McCauley, Dean Morton, Dan O'Rourke, Brian Pochmara, Kevin Pollock, Kyle Rehman, Chris Rooney, Justin St. Pierre and Ian Walsh and linesmen Steve Barton, Brian Mach, Tim Nowak and Jay Sharrers. Barton, Joannette, Leggo, McCauley, Nowak, Pollock, Rooney and Sharrers all worked the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

- ECHL has affiliations with 23 of the 29 teams in the American Hockey League and for the past 19 years there has been an ECHL player on the Calder Cup Champion.

- In the last six seasons the ECHL has had more call-ups to the AHL than all other professional leagues combined with over 2,000 call-ups involving more than 1,000 players since 2002-03.
