SIOUX CITY, Iowa. - An old baseball adage says you should aim to win two out of every three at home and play .500 on the road. At 34-7 at home, the Sioux Falls Pheasants have more than taken care of the former. The Pheasants took care of the latter with a 4-2 win over the Sioux City Explorers on Sunday night.
The victory concluded the road portion of the regular season for the Pheasants at 24-24 road record, best in the American Association. It is part of Sioux Falls' 58-31 overall record, also tops in the league.
The Pheasants maintained a slim one-half game lead for first place in the second-half division race. The second-place Wichita Wingnuts edged El Paso 1-0 to keep pace.
Beau Torbert broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with a two-run double to give the Pheasants the 4-2 lead. Torbert has 35 doubles this season, tied for the most in a season by a Sioux Falls franchise player. Torbert leads the league with 93 RBI.
Chris Salberg (11-1) matched a season-high with eight strikeouts on the way to his 11th win. He is tied for the most wins in the league along with teammate Ryan Rodriguez and Shreveport-Bossier's Osvaldo Rodriguez. Salberg allowed five hits and two runs while walking six. His only mistake was a two-out, two-run double to Javier Brown in the bottom of the fourth inning, which tied the game at 2-2.
Ryan Grant and Brandon Rapoza each tossed an inning of scoreless relief before Aaron Cotter threw a perfect ninth for his league-leading 23rd save.
Reggie Abercrombie gave the Pheasants a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run, his 21st of the year. The run scored was the Pheasants' 592nd of the year, breaking a league record for runs scored in a season. The Lincoln Saltdogs scored 591 in 2006.
Rookie John Leonard (0-2) took the loss for Sioux City.
The Pheasants open a three-game series against the Lincoln Saltdogs at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, August 22. The series is part of a seven-game homestand to close out the regular season. Monday night is a Kids Eat Free night, sponsored by KSFY-TV.
The Pheasants are members of the American Association, a 10-team independent professional baseball league playing its fifth season this summer. Individual and group ticket information is available by calling (605) 333-0179. Fans can also visit the Pheasants at www.sfpheasants.com.
