Pheasants Snap Streak with Win in Sioux City

SIOUX FALLS - The Sioux Falls Pheasants broke a six-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the Sioux City Explorers on Thursday night in Sioux City.

The Pheasants' bats erupted for 13 hits while starter Alan DeRatt (3-3) tossed a gem to lead the effort.

Sioux Falls (26-25) jumped out to an early lead. Cristian Guerrero notched the first Pheasants' hit in the second inning and scored on Jake Taylor's RBI double.

But Sioux City bounced right back in the bottom of the second to tie the game on Wally Backman Jr.'s RBI single.

Sioux Falls took the lead for good in the top of the third inning with two-out hitting. Jared Bolden slapped a double, and Cesar Nicolas smacked a RBI single over third baseman Wally Backman Jr.'s glove for a 2-1 lead.

Great plays from the Pheasants' defense backed DeRatt in the next three innings. Jonny Kaplan took away a double from Brandon Newton with a diving catch in center field, and Jake Taylor made a 360-degree spinning throw at shortstop to save a hit in the fourth inning.

The Explorers had the bases loaded with no outs in the fifth when Guerrero made a catch in right field and threw out a runner attempting to tag and score for a double play. Yusuke Inoguchi lined out two batters later to end the threat.

Quintana doubled home Guerrero in the sixth for a 3-1 lead. Cesar Nicolas' sacrifice fly and error brought home two in the seventh to cap the Pheasants' scoring.

Quintana, Guerrero and Nicolas each had multi-hit performances. Quintana was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Guerrero went 3-for-5 with a stolen base and two runs scored and Nicolas was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

DeRatt threw seven innings allowing one run on only two hits. He also walked five and struck out three. Except for the bases-loaded jam in the fifth, DeRatt allowed multiple base runners just once and retired the final nine men he faced.

Dan Cooper, Jack Van Leur and Kyle Mertins combined to shut out the Explorers (24-29) in the final two innings.

Jason Jarvis (4-6) started for the Explorers, lasting six plus innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits.

Game two of the four-game series is at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, July 13, in Sioux City. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
