WORCESTER, Mass. - The Tornadoes scored two runs in the sixth inning and out-dueled the RailCats pitching staff for a 2-1 win in the series opener on Thursday night. The game was the first of the RailCats 11-game Can-Am road trip.

RailCats starter Morgan Coombs retired the first 10 batters he faced, striking out six in the first three innings. He would strike out a career-high seven before Worcester got to him in the sixth inning. Chris Torres hit a one-out RBI single to break the scoreless tie. Marshall Schuler came on in relief and hit Kyle Nisson with a pitch with the bases full to give the Tornadoes a 2-0 lead.

The RailCats were shutout by Tornadoes starter Kevin Cooper for 6 2/3 innings. They remained scoreless until the ninth, when David Cooper hit a two-out RBI single to score Mike Rohde and cut the lead to 2-1. With two on and two out, Ryan Babineau hit a ball hard down the left field line, but Ryan Brockett made the running catch to end the game.

Due to illness, the RailCats were short-handed on position players and had pitcher Nolan Nicholson start the game as DH. He was 0-for-1 with two sacrifices. Chris Allen, another pitcher, pinch-hit for Nicholson in the ninth and flew out.

Game two of the series will be on Friday night at 6:05 Central Time. Rookie left-hander Tyler Deetjen (1-1, 4.50) will be on the mound for Gary.
