Pheasants Sign Catcher, Place Contreras on DL

SIOUX FALLS - The Sioux Falls Pheasants signed rookie catcher Matt Powell on Saturday and placed catcher Henry Contreras on the disabled list, retroactive to August 11.

Contreras suffered a concussion in a collision at home plate during a contest with the Winnipeg Goldeyes on August 10. In 69 games this season, Contreras is hitting .269 with six home runs and 38 RBI.

Powell, 24, played parts of June and July with the Wichita Wingnuts in his first professional season. In 14 games he went 4-for-23 (.174) with two RBI. The resident of San Diego, Calif. Played collegiately at Gross Pointe Community College, Cal State Fullerton and Southern Nazarene University.

Contreras is eligible for re-activation on August 18. The Pheasants roster has 22 active players and one player on the disabled list.

The Sioux Falls Pheasants continue a three-game series tonight against the Sioux City Explorers at 6:05 p.m. tonight at Sioux Falls Stadium.
