St. Paul Saints News Release
FARGO, ND - The St. Paul Saints know that the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks will take great pride in hurting their playoff chances as they try to play spoiler over the next two weeks. They were able to do it on Friday night as a five run sixth inning was enough to send the Saints to an 8-5 defeat at Newman Outdoor Field.
With the game tied at three in the sixth the Saints grabbed their second lead of the night when Ronnie Bourquin led off with a single. He moved to second on a ground out and scored on Jonathan Van Every's double to give the Saints a 4-3 lead.
The RedHawks, however, answered in a big way in the bottom of the inning. Jesse Hoorelbeke led off with a solo homer to right, his 13th of the season and the 14th allowed by Saints starter Matt Long, which tied the game at four. Carlo Cota followed with a double, Kyle Nichols walked and an infield single from Jonathan Wyatt loaded the bases. Kole Zimmerman gave the RedHawks a 5-4 lead with a sacrifice fly. Todd Jennings' single loaded the bases again and Zach Penprase made it 7-4 with a two-run double. C.J. Retherford finished the scoring with a sacrifice line out. Long went 5.2 innings allowing eight runs on 10 hits while walking one and striking out four.
The Saints took their first lead of the night in the third as they trailed 2-0. Aharon Eggleston, the newest Saint, led off with a single. Ole Sheldon and Jason Cooper walked to load the bases. Argelis Nunez' RBI groundout made it 3-1 and Bourquin doubled home two to give the Saints a 3-2 lead.
The Saints had a chance to tie it in the ninth loading the bases with one out, but Sheldon and Cooper struck out to end the game.
The Saints missed an opportunity to tie the Winnipeg Goldeyes for first in the North Division and allowed the Wichita Wingnuts to get within 2.0 games in the wild card with 16 to go.
The same two teams meet in game two of the three game series Saturday night at Newman Outdoor Field at 7:02 p.m. The Saints send RHP Alberto Rolon (8-3, 3.95) to the mound against RedHawks RHP Dan Blewett (1-3, 9.11). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
