St. Paul Saints News Release
FARGO, ND - Against a team that is 14 games under .500 and facing a pitcher with an ERA of more than 9.00 the St. Paul Saints looked to have the advantage on Saturday night at Newman Outdoor Field, but it was the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks who took advantage of a struggling starting pitcher and the Saints lost for the second consecutive night 6-3 and saw their wild card lead dwindle to one game.
Saints starter Alberto Rolon didn't have his good stuff on Saturday evening and struggled from the beginning. He walked lead off hitter Zach Penprase and gave up a single to C.J. Retherford. Nic Jackson drove in a run with a single to make it 1-0. After a walk to Jesse Hoorlebeke loaded the bases Carlo Cota made it 2-0 with an RBI single. A double play ground out by Kyle Nichols made it 3-0.
In the second Kole Zimmerman and Todd Jennings led off with back-to-back singles and a sac fly from Penprase made it 4-0.
The Saints looked like they were going to mount a comeback against Dan Blewett, who entered the game with a 9.11 ERA. They loaded the bases in the third on three straight walks to start the inning. Aharon Eggleston then drove one off the wall in right-center, but instead of clearing the bases with a double, he was forced to hold at first as both Steve Mays and Adam Frost appeared to hold up. Instead it was a two-run single that made it 4-2. Ole Sheldon's RBI single scored Frost from second and sent Eggleston to second, making it 4-3. Eggleston stole third, but Eggleston broke for home on Jason Cooper's tapper back to the mound and was thrown out. The Saints wouldn't be able to push across the tying run as Argelis Nunez flew out and Ronnie Bourquin struck out to end the inning.
The RedHawks got the insurance runs they needed in the fourth as Rolon walked Jake Krause to lead off the inning and after getting an out was removed after throwing 102 pitches in 3.1 innings. Kyle Carr gave up back-to-back RBI doubles to Jackson and Hoorlebeke to make it 6-3. Rolon went 3.1 innings allowing five runs on six hits while walking five and striking out three.
The Saints managed just five hits on the evening and had just three runners in scoring position from the fourth inning on.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series on Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. The Saints send RHP Jake Schmidt (5-2, 5.43) to the mound against RedHawks LHP Kevin Light (0-1, 6.50). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
